Discussing money issues with your partner

By Samantha Chow Jia Ern, Updated: 8/14/2009

Money matters have always been a sensitive subject for most of us, especially with our partner. However, managing money wisely is a crucial part in a marriage, especially when it involves other factors like children and your house mortgage. Here are several tips on how you can go through that important discussion without blowing each other's heads off.

1. Make ground rules Before the start of any discussion, do try to gently establish some ground rules. Make it a base rule that whatever happens, your relationship will not be affected.

Suggest that both of you will not play the blame game. Instead take responsibility for your mistakes. In the worst case scenario, agree to disagree. Or better yet... compromise!

Try to avoid judging each other, especially when your partner does not agree with you. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, so no matter how far-fetched or bizarre his view sounds, you should be mature enough not to condemn or to make sarcastic comments.

2. Be open and honest Be honest about your personal and joint financial issues. Don’t hide any income and debt, and do speak out if you feel uncomfortable about a certain financial decision that both of you have a part in. Communicate well by not keeping your opinions to yourself although you feel strongly against it, but try suggesting a new alternative, then stating the reasons for your support. State your willingness to compromise if he agrees to consider your option.

3. Be prepared to listen. Really listen. Pay attention to what your partner is speaking. Don’t interrupt or cut in when the other person is speaking, but put in your suggestion after he is done stating his point. While he is speaking, look at him in the eye and don’t get distracted by the TV or the phone. Try to think from his point of view and find justification and reasons to why his opinion is different. You might be surprised to hear of something that you might have missed out on.

4. Be sensible Firstly you should make it clear that whatever financial decisions you make, you have to live within your means. The expenses should not exceed the combined income, and if both partners agree, to leave a portion for savings. The decisions that both of you make should always take into consideration the other people who you are both responsible for financially. Also do take into consideration how much your other partner is contributing to your family’s financial needs.

5. Keep your cool Keep the conversation calm and mature. Don’t scream or speak in high tones even when you get mad. If the discussion has reached a high point then perhaps the both of you can take some time out to calm down first before going back to the discussion. Shouting and yelling does not help anyone, instead it’ll make the other person defensive and reluctant to consider your suggestion, however reasonable it may be.

Dior Lilas Addict 2009 Collection

Samantha Chow Jia Ern, Updated: Wed, 05 Aug 2009 06:23:03 GMT

Inspired by botanical motifs and fresh spring colours, Dior’s new limited make-up collection captures the essence of lilac hues to evoke an irresistible femininity.

The colour lilac has always been a favourite to Dior’s founding father Christian Dior for it brings back memories of his childhood spent in the garden of his family’s villa Les Rhumbs in Granville. This colour then inspired the “Mitzah” Haute Couture creations many years later.

The current main designer for this renowned fashion brand, John Galliano, has also a fondness for the delicate colour and uses it to punctuate every one of his fashion shows.

Bringing the colour over to the cosmetics divisions, Dior makes use of the endless variations of lilac shades. From white to amethyst and pastel pink, the new make-up collection is girlishly alluring for all women.

The Lilas Addict 2009 Collection consists of Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect (RM84), Dior Addict High Shine oil-free lipstick (RM88), 5 Couleurs Iridescent Eyeshadow (RM189) and Dior Vernis ultra-glossy nail lacquer (RM69).

Dior Lilas Collection will be available at all Dior counters from August 2009

Pucci Fall Winter 2009

Samantha Chow Jia Ern, Updated: Tue, 04 Aug 2009 09:25:37 GMT

Juxtaposing freedom and noble legacy of the 16th century, the new Pucci AW09 collection is inspired by the centuries-old Siennese Palio horse race and the extravagant graphics of the banners.

Designed by Emilio Pucci’s artistic director Peter Dundas, this new Autumn Winter 09 collection is a combination of traditional legacy coalescing with the contemporary ease of today’s world.

This collection displays the energetic and easy attitude of the defiant aristocratic Pucci girl in their prized tunic and trousers, zippered deerskin pants and luscious fox fur.

Printed mini-dresses that seem washed and faded are worn with slouchy butter soft suede pirate boots and reflect the iconic historic pieces of the brand. Fur-lined biker blousons and oversized silk smoking jackets in bold Palio prints are for those with drop dead attitude.

Trousers are Capri reproduced in faded printed cotton or slinky military green cargo. Leather shorts and cotton canvas reflect the Palio silhouettes. Patchworks and cut-outs of Pucci-patterned guipure lace and beading replay the graphic motifs of the night. Silk jersey dresses with matalassé appliqués of fragmented prints in bright colours are held up by gourmette chains.

The colours are black, bottle green and aubergine faded into printed material and are accompanied by mohair-patched fur, leather and gold braiding.

Pucci Autumn Winter 2009 Collection is available in Pucci boutiques nationwide from August 2009.

How to: From frumpy to stylish

By Samantha Chow Jia Ern, Updated: 8/3/2009

Turn yourself from a dowdy fashion Know-Nothing to Style Queen in just a few easy steps!

Your friends are embarrassed to be seen with you, your wardrobe is full of hand-me-downs and you don’t remember the last time you bought a new top. Haven’t you heard that there are no ugly women in this world, just lazy ones? Here are some tips on how to revamp yourself into a classy fashionista with your own original style without busting your purse, and stun your friends!

The first step to recovery is admittance. Look at yourself in the mirror and admit that you have almost absolutely no sense of style, or are just too lazy to make an effort to dress up! Whatever the reason is, tell yourself that it is time to make a change, and boost your confidence and style to make yourself a better you! Trust us, you’ll love yourself more for it.

Next, believe in yourself. Know that every woman is born beautiful; it is just whether you continue to work hard to maintain yourself. Nobody is born looking gorgeous all the time, but those that do don’t actually depend on just their genes. They are constantly improving their fashion sense and physical beauty, such as wearing makeup and taking some time to prepare their outfits for the next day. Even a small amount of effort shows off in the long run. On the flip side, so does laziness.

Get yourself inspired. Be more alert on fashion news and style tips from magazines, television or even from the conversations around you! Try to gain knowledge, and it does not have to be only from fashion magazines, but also from what people around you are wearing. Notice your friends’ outfits, and ask them where they bought it from if it catches your eye. You don’t have to follow the current ‘season’s trends’ to the dot – it would lead to constant updating on your wardrobe which will break the bank. Stay to classic cuts, colours and pieces and you’ll be just fine. Also, find a fashion idol or muse whose style you admire and feel inspired by.

Make the effort, now. You are inspired to change your style, and have been watching and waiting for the right time. Well, there is no better time than right now! Start by making smarter purchases that fit your frame better and are versatile so pieces can be mixed and matched, or worn in many ways. Understand that being fashionable is not a one-off thing, but has to be maintained regularly.

No one can be a complete fashion know-nothing – surely there are some items in your wardrobe which can be reused, mixed and matched to create a new outfit. Discuss with your girlfriends what looks best on you, and don’t be afraid to try something different. Spend some time studying what you want your style to be and do not hog items of clothing just for sentimental reasons. If it doesn’t go with your new look, chuck it out!

Do some research before shopping. Either bring a friend along who will tell you honestly whether that skirt makes your hips look wide. If you prefer not to have another opinion, then make a list of things you want to buy, and keep to it! Buy clothing items that are classic and long lasting such as the black pencil cut skirt, a good pair of jeans, a classic white shirt, and an LBD.

Tweak what you already have, either by DIY or a tailor. You’d be surprised at how different certain clothes would look after a little altering magic, and how much better it would fit and look on you.

Don’t forget your hair and make up! You do not have to be a make up pro to look gorgeous – most of the time simple make up techniques would suffice. Heavy cosmetics are a no-no except maybe for huge events at night. During the day just taking the effort to wear something simple like a light blusher, eyeliner and a dab of lip gloss would make the difference. Get advice from your friends or make up artists for quick and efficient make up applying techniques, as well as from magazines or keep referring to your fave fashion and beauty website, MSN Life & Style! Learning is a constant process, and you will always leave learning something new. Adapt a hairstyle that makes you comfortable and gives you a renewed look. Experiment with different haircuts or even a different hairstylist, and the result may be an exhilarating difference to the hairstyle you’ve been sporting for years.

Finally, love yourself for who you are. Know that you are making the right choice in taking the effort to change yourself to look better and that will reflect in how you feel. Expanding your fashion savvy and self-improving efforts would prove that you care for yourself enough to make that change. Go out and flaunt the new you. After receiving all the compliments from your friends and family, you can only feel so much better for it!

Simple’s Oil Balancing Facial Scrub

By Samantha Chow Jia Ern, Updated: 7/30/2009

One of the nation’s leading skincare brands, Simple, launched a new product in an effort to combat blackheads, a common skin problem among Malaysian women. Samantha Chow Jia Ern gives it a test.

Simple recently launched its Clear Skin Oil Balancing Facial Scrub, a product of much research and study which is said to work to reduce blackheads and exfoliate the skin to achieve a softer, brighter and clearer complexion.

This face wash is suitable for those with oily and combination skin for its active ingredients absorb the oil and therefore keeping the skin looking cleaner and help prevent any zits forming. This particular facial scrub does not contain any artificial perfume, colour or chemicals therefore it won’t cause any irritation to sensitive skin. It is instead formulated with three skin loving nutrients – Witch Hazel to reduce blemishes and Natural Zinc PCA to absorb oil, exfoliate and smoothen skin, and two important vitamins - Pro-vitamin B5 to actively restore, soften and soothe and Vitamin E, which moisturises skin.

Samantha has combination skin and experience frequent breakouts especially in Malaysia’s hot, humid and hazy weather. The Clear Skin Oil Balancing Facial Scrub claims to reduce blackheads by an astounding 64% in just seven days. Samantha faithfully used this wash for a week in her quest to debunk the myth or discover the truth behind the product’s claim. Here’s what she thinks:

“When used, the scrub is surprisingly less rough than other scrubs I’ve used before. It comes out as a clear white cream but turns transparent when it goes on your face. It thins and dilutes considerably when I rub it all over my face, but when I wash it off, my face is noticeably brighter and cleaner. After seven days of use, my skin is cleaner, less oily and my blackheads are distinctly reduced.”

Simple’s Clear Skin Oil Balancing Facial Scrub is priced at RM19.90 for a 75ml tube and is now available nationwide at all leading pharmacies, hypermarkets, and supermarkets.

Eating for your skin

Samantha Chow Jia Ern, Updated: Thu, 30 Jul 2009 07:23:18 GMT

Just hours before the all-important date, you find a new red zit popping out prominently on your chin. Doesn’t it make you wonder why some women always seem to have naturally good skin, while you can never seem to achieve the flawless look without makeup?

Nothing comes free. Women who have gorgeous skin usually practice some kind of beauty regime regularly, regardless of whether she has good genes or not. Haven’t you heard of the saying, ‘you are what you eat’? Well, it rings true for anyone. No one can achieve perfect skin without practising at least a few healthy habits like washing your face regularly and eating nutritious food.

Vitamin A, C and E are vital nutrients for achieving good skin. Vitamin A helps rejuvenate your skin and protect it from the sun’s ultra-violet rays. Besides helping produce collagen and protect your cells from radical damage, Vitamin C helps fight off oxidative damage. Meanwhile, Vitamin E helps protect cell membranes and can work together with Vitamin C to provide an extra boost of anti-aging skin protection.

You should watch carefully what you eat because whatever you put in your mouth doesn’t just disappear into oblivion. It goes through your digestive system and whatever nutrients or unhealthy elements of the food that you gobbled down is absorbed by your body and it’ll show in your skin.

Your daily diet should be high in protein, fibre and of course plain water! Nothing beats good old H2O which detoxifies your body and is preferable to fruit juices which may have additional sugar or colouring.

There are some common everyday food that you can eat to help provide your body with the nutrients it needs to maintain healthy flawless skin – consume in moderation, of course.

Hot And Not: Michelle Obama vs Hillary Clinton

Samantha Chow Jia Ern, Updated: Tue, 28 Jul 2009 09:54:36 GMT

Two First Ladies – two different styles. Known as the new Jackie O’ of First Lady fashion, Michelle Obama is the new queen in fashion-dom and also the American nation. Hillary Clinton, the almost-President, is unfortunately notorious for her infamous fashion faux pas, which was the jibe of a foreign minister recently.

Mrs Obama’s modern chic style attracts and awes women all over the world. She has now become a new fashion icon of political correctness for her fashion sense as well as her role as the current First Lady of America. And under such public scrutiny, she has become the talk of fashion mags and gossip tabloids for her trendy yet classy style. Michelle Obama understands her responsibility with the power she holds, and she portrays it perfectly well in her chosen outfits while attending the numerous events as First Lady. How does she do it? Her strong shoulders, toned arms and shapely silhouette definitely complement her choices. Also her polished make-up and flattering hairstyles lends notches up in her style points. But most of all, it’s her impeccable dress sense that makes her the talk of the town.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton is making headlines…for the wrong reasons.

"Sometimes she looks like a primary schoolgirl and sometimes a pensioner going shopping," a North Korea spokesman was recently quoted. Poor Hillary.

Michelle is the new darling of America while the people are fed up of Hillary and her appalling fashion (as well as diplomacy?) skills. Here is why we say so.

Built to focus on lightweight stability and cushioning, the result of a mere 10.1 ounces is a staggering 66% weight reduction from the original. Now that’s what we call light! Several new key features contributes to this new lightness - the innovative Acespan Mesh, a lightweight material which reduces weight while creating an upper that moves with the foot but is stronger than ever, a three-piece injected Phylon midsole optimising cushioning and support, as well as the use of lightweight screen-printed Swoosh design trademark and eyelet detail, further reducing the overall weight.

Like its heritage, the Air Maxim still features its trademark suede heel counter and rand in original Sport Red.

The new Nike Air Maxim range is available at all Nike stores from July 2009.

Lacoste Limited Edition Crocodile Mythology

By Samantha Chow Jia Ern, http://malaysia.msn.com, Updated: 7/16/2009

Commemorating the story of how the brand started, the new collection by Lacoste celebrates the legend of the brand’s founder Rene Lacoste and the mythologies surrounding the crocodile.

It all began in 1925 when Rene Lacoste made a bet with Pierre Gillou, the French Davis Team Captain to win the next Davis Cup match, the prize being a crocodile skin suitcase in Boston. Rene Lacoste did not win, but a local journalist wrote about the match saying, “The young Lacoste has not won his Crocodile skin suitcase but he fought like a real crocodile”. The nickname stuck and the crocodile emblem was adopted by Rene Lacoste, who embroidered the logo onto the outside pocket of his jacket, creating a new legendary brand logo.

This new collection includes two new shoes – Missouri Albino and Rene Lacoste Japan.

Missouri Albino is inspired by the myth of the sacred Lake Venda shared by a python and an albino crocodile, where virgin Venda maidens offered themselves to the lake to receive a fertility blessing. In honour of the Albino Crocodile, the Missouri’s upper made is of different white coloured materials. The traditional clothing of the Venda tribe inspires the bright colour pops on the in-sock, sole and surround of the shoe top.

Rene Lacoste Japan is inspired by the story of a blind man who was saved from drowning by an enormous crocodile. The traditional Japanese silk kimono is the main theme for this design, whereas the upper fabric of the shoe has a satin feel while the print is a digital interpretation of a crocodile skin print. The Missouri Albino is priced at RM569, and is currently available at Sole What?, The Gardens. Rene Lacoste (price currently unavailable) will be on sale at Sole What? by end July.

A colourful eclectic blend of themes, texture and colours, Topshop’s latest AW09 collection features four lines, each with their own compilation of different styles and themes.

Horror Girls is a quirky take on Hammer House of Horror movie dressing. The collection plays with cobweb-esque gothic lace and crushed velvet jacket lines. Materials are inspired by Victorian nightwear for blouses and corsets while shirts and jeans are inspired by 80s denim.

Celebration of style

Samantha Chow Jia Ern, , Updated: Thu, 02 Jul 2009 23:39:22 GMT

Inspired by their 21st anniversary, Ted Baker’s FW2009 collection marks the beginning in the fashion brand’s definitive design. This collection theme is to retain nostalgic references with a traditional British feel of the dark and stormy winter ambience.

The Ted Baker FW09 womenswear collection has billowing sleeves and soft jersey drapes, creating a dramatic effect. Bold structures and heavy pleating form abstract shapes, and sculpted dresses forge an hourglass silhouette. Feminine curves are softly outlined through high waisted pencil skirts.

Colours include intense thunderous greys, midnight blues and forest blacks. Luxurious silk and wool mixes are injected with feminine colours of pillar box red and lipstick pink. Accessories are beautifully bold with a python effect leather bag or paisley box clutch.

The Ted Baker FW09 menswear is nostalgic with individual details that are relaxed yet uniquely luxurious. The colour palette includes cloudy greys and deep cherry red, analogous to the changing season. The tailoring has a quiet, confident sophistication to finish off a timeless collection.

Power Season

Samantha Chow Jia Ern, , Updated: Thu, 02 Jul 2009 23:58:08 GMT

The ‘power’ statement is in this season in fashion house Dorothy Perkins.

Exaggerated shoulder wear and sexy silhouettes are the main themes of Dorothy Perkins’ FW09 collection. Key fabrics used include unique material like acid washed denim, supple leather, luxurious velvet and heavy embellishment.

This collection is inspired by the glamorous, exuberant 80s fashion look with a modern edge using materials like boyfriend jackets coupled with body-con dresses and slim fit jeans.

This season, outerwear is making a statement by using big shoulders, decadent accessories, pointed padding and studding on the shoulders. The use of accessories is prominent with statement heels and oversized clutches. The stud is overworked into appealing ankle boots, multi-stranded belts and chunky biker boots. Coloured animal prints punctuate an otherwise solemn outfit.

My First Paintball Experience

by Samantha Chow Jia Ern (M/6366)

When I heard that my college was organizing a Sports Day-like event with paintball as one of the activities in it for a very more-than-reasonable overall price of RM18 I immediately knew I had to go, since playing paintball is on my list of Things-To-Do-Before-I-Die.

Organized by Propassion Communications, Taylor’s University College hosted Taylor’s Mass Colympics on the 18th of April 2009 at the Xtion Paintball Park, Bukit Jalil. Tertiary students from all over came on that day for fun and games as well as to meet Allan Wu, the host for Amazing Race Asia. Highlight games included paintball, futsal, rock climbing as well as our very own mini Amazing Race. For RM18, it was a once in a lifetime chance of enjoying a healthy sporty day out with your friends, as well as meeting new ones.

I initially arranged to have a paintball team with my university friends, but after my high school friends got the wind of the event, all were clamouring to come. It turns out that 9 of them would be able to make it so including me, we formed two paintball teams. A team of the guys (Alpha) and a team of us girls (QueenB). My uni friends formed two teams as well.

I officially bought the tickets about a week before the event, and I had a great week as I was happily looking forward to the weekend. The anticipation is always greater and more wonderful than the thing itself, don’t you think so?

We made it to the stadium about one hour late and missed the briefing. We had to ask my uni friends to explain the rules. And suddenly, they announced the first teams to play and so it starts! My friends and I sat on the burning metal seat contraptions under the hot sun and watched the first teams play in order to get some strategy based on how other people played.

The objective was to shoot down your team’s glass bottle before grabbing two flags from different sides of the field and then running to home base. The team that scores the highest, counting along individual’s mistakes such as removing your mask before you’re allowed to, wins.

It was a coincidence that they put my team against the guys’ Alpha team! Anyway, once we found out that we were fighting each other, the guys got so excited and maybe a slightly tad overconfident. We girls didn’t say much but were determined to try our best and hopefully beat the guys, so we quietly watched other teams play and made our strategies.

It was all over in less than 5 minutes. And QueenB had won the first round! The boys were dejected and understandably embarrassed to have been beaten by the girls. We girls were ecstatic and high, now more confident and self-assured after having beaten the boys. I did not really play a big part in the winning of the game seeing as I did not shoot the bottle or any of the opposing team members, and neither did I capture any of the flags. In fact, I wasn’t aware that the bottle was shot and was busy trying to hide as much of myself as possible, while trying to shoot at the opposition. It was a while when I only realized that Joey had captured the second flag and was running to home base, so I followed.

Ah good team mates.

Overall, team QueenB won 3 rounds and made it into quarter finals but unfortunately due to tiredness and the long wait we lost in that round. The funny thing was that in the second last round we auto-made it into the next round because our opposing team had gone home. Yes, the wait in between rounds was that long.

On that day I also tried the rock climbing (which was not the first time) but unfortunately did not make it to the top! My whole body was sore for days after especially my arms – I blame it on this rock climbing thing, not the paintball game.

I’m very glad that we went for this event as playing private paintball is not cheap (It can reach up to a couple of hundred per person per game) and I also had a chance to sweat and tan myself, getting rid of the sickly paleness obtained through staying indoors studying (or in my case, facebook-ing heh).

Oh wait one more last thing. *crosses out Playing Paintball on list*

French Irreverence

Samantha Chow Jia Ern, http://malaysia.msn.com, Updated: Wed, 01 Jul 2009 11:34:51 GMT

A celebratory homage to French freedom and impertinence, Aaron De Mey produces Declaring Indigo, a line of cosmetics for Lancôme Paris

Embodying French irreverence and the legendary free-spiritedness of Paris with a skilful blend of boldness, chic style and elegance, a make-up revolution is born.

The imaginary heroine beauty is a sensual, impertinent Parisian avant-gardist in stilettos who challenges all the rules. With respect to such iconic Frenchwomen such as Simone de Beauvoir and Brigitte Bardot, the free-thinking designer and visionary make-up artist Aaron De Mey created this line as the result of his search for freedom of vision and by transcending its barriers.

Echoing the Parisian coat of arms, the major colours of these cosmetic sets range from incandescent indigo and pure and nude gold, to a flaming matte red.

Saving Earth

by Samantha Chow (M/6366)

Earth Hour has passed and gone, but did it really achieve its purpose?

The point of Earth Hour is to spread global awareness about saving energy and at the same time, actually do some real energy saving.

It was a global awareness alright but did it achieve its other purpose? Did the people on earth really use lesser energy on Earth Hour or did the energy usage actually increase due to all the publicity, parties and concerts? (All in the name of Earth Hour pfft)

I'm afraid I have to agree with some people that Earth Hour was more like a publicity stunt (for sponsors like giant retailer Sears who 'proudly announced that they're a national sponsor of Earth Hour 2009', countless radio and TV stations who halted transmission for an hour, and Google etc).

Many people want to be known as environmentally friendly as it's a cool 'in-thing' but do you really stop to think of the extra energy used in countless (all forms of) adverts to promote Earth Hour? Is the energy saved from Earth Hour enough to compensate for it?

I think that Earth Hour was used by many as an excuse to party! And no, I'm not condemning it because it’s what we 'socialites' like to do nowadays. Find any reason to go out! Truth be told, I would've gone on the party that night at Capsquare, KL myself if not for my assignment and Grey's Anatomy.

That is why I do not think that the true noble point of Earth Hour has been achieved by the party itself due to energy spent on 'spreading awareness of the issue'.

Although, you can give justification for the parties and stuff by saying that 'spending all the energy now creates awareness in people so that they'll learn to save more energy in the future', and yes I agree! Earth Hour was done to spread AWARENESS and since this was done on a (somewhat successful) global scale, so congratulations!

Now it's our part as individuals to save energy as much as we can on a constant mode and not only give a blind 'show of support' for publicized events like Earth Hour.
God, even the people who started Earth Hour admitted that it was just a hypocritical campaign, and that we may have actually emitted MORE emissions instead!

So how TRULY environmentally friendly are you?
